The Pollizotto’s and 24th Street

September 28, 2007 by michael4hermosa

Last night saw our third successful Meet and Greet, as residents from around the city came to talk about the future of Hermosa Beach. Janice and Daniel Pollizotto were gracious hosts and afterwards, some of the guests jumped in for a group shot…

Stay tuned to the Out and About section of my website to find out about upcoming Meet and Greets in your area.

HB Citizen Thwarts “Slasher”

September 8, 2007 by michael4hermosa

Early in the morning of Sunday, Aug 26, a Hermosa resident saw three subjects slashing tires of cars parked on the street. The witness called officers who located two of the three suspects. One of the suspects had a knife with black residue on it that resembled tire residue.

The officers were able to identify at least eleven vehicles with recently slashed tires. Due to the extent of the damage the suspect was arrested for suspicion of Felony Vandalism.

The Hermosa Beach Police Department appreciates the observations by residents. However witnesses are reminded to call 911 from “land lines”. Cell phones calls should go directly to the dispatch center at 310 524-2750. Please program this number into your phone under “Emergency HBPD.”

Always try and obtain a good description of the suspect and, if appropriate, a license plate number. Don’t take action on your own. Be a good witness. Support the Neighborhood Watch Program.

Thoughts On the Pier Plaza Problems

August 31, 2007 by michael4hermosa

Many of the people I’ve been talking to recently have concerns about the “rowdiness” on the Pier Plaza. I’d like to share my thoughts here by posting a Letter to the Editor that was published recently in both the Daily Breeze, and the Easy Reader:

Restoring Order

As I talk with Hermosa Beach voters, I am increasingly aware of the growing frustration that our City has not addressed problems emanating from Pier Plaza.

Balancing what goes on in our downtown with the quality of life that residents deserve is one of the primary issues to which I will devote my energy as a candidate for City Council. Our City needs a thriving business environment, but not at the expense of those who live here.

What happens on Pier Plaza is fundamentally a management problem, not just a “bar” problem. Certainly, downtown establishments could do more to prevent the negative impacts of over-served customers, but, real, long-term solutions will only develop when we change the City’s downtown policy, and put that policy into effect through the City Manager and Police Chief.

With assistance from officers of neighboring cities and the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), we can develop a ‘task force’ approach to maintaining peace in our neighborhoods.

I suggest we begin by enforcing existing laws – basic laws – that focus on disruptive conduct. For example, I’d initiate efforts aimed at curbing establishments from over-serving patrons, imposing stiffer fines and penalties on people who disturb the peace, and stepping up enforcement of gross infractions like public urination.

As word gets out that ‘belligerence is not welcome in Hermosa Beach’, I believe we will see the bad behavior disappear.

But it all begins with a policy shift at the City Council. If elected, I will work with my Council colleagues, residents and local businesses to find resourceful, effective solutions.

My campaign officially began last week. Despite a little rain on Sunday, this weekend was really good for getting out and knocking on doors, which I did a lot of and was fortunate to meet several new friends as a result.

blogpic1-rickathistsoc2.jpg For a little fun and relaxation, Sunday night we went to the Hermosa Beach Historical Society’s “Night of Nostalgia” fundraiser, where I saw my good friend Rick Koenig. Rick is Past-President of the Historical Society, and current President of the Hermosa Arts Foundation.

Welcome

Thank you for coming to my campaign blog.  Over the coming months I hope that this becomes a valuable place to find updates about my campaign and the issues that are important to the residents of Hermosa Beach.
